Annie Fox for Teens... Hey, Terra!

Annie (AKA Hey Terra!) has been around long enough to have experienced a lot of what Life can dish out. But, it hasn’t been so long that she's forgotten what it's like to be your age. Check out some of the thousands of email questions teens from around the world have sent to Terra. You may learn something useful from her answers:

Wish I had one:
“How can I make an impression on this guy?”

Hey Terra,

I need to know how to impress a boy, and I don't know how. But could you please help me or give me some info on how to get a guy's attention? So if you could please help me let me know.

Thanks

Boy Crazy

Dear Boy Crazy,

So there's a guy whose attention you want to get? The thing a lot of people don't understand is that going for the "big impression" or doing something outrageous to "get someone's attention" is mostly just for show. And when you come on to a guy with a big show like that it can be:

a) overwhelming and embarrassing for him
b) put a lot of pressure on him to come up with the next move
c) disappointing and hurtful for you if he doesn't respond the way you want
d) something you will regret
The best way you can impress anyone is by being yourself (that's the most unique thing you've got!). This might sound lame, but have you tried talking to him? You know, starting with a friendly "Hi. How's it going?" If you really want to get to know this guy better and give him a chance to get to know the real you, that's going to take time.

Are you willing to invest the time to build a friendship first? If you are, then you are much more likely to have a healthy relationship.

In friendship,

Terra
