“My marriage is in trouble and our son appears to be experimenting with drugs.”
(continued)

Dear Annie,

Yes, thanks. I agree. We have a parent meeting coming up. I am just not sure how to mitigate the continuing damage of our marital issues, I am sure it hurts him. I've tried to get my wife to stop arguing in front of our son, but she won't agree. That is why I am so frustrated and feel at a standstill. Not that I am perfect either, I realize, but it takes two.

Sam I Am

Dear Sam I Am,

Surely you two can agree on one thing... That you both love your son and that fighting in front of him is damaging to him. So forget about who starts it and all that. Just see if you two can agree not to fight in front of him.

As for couples counseling... Would she not agree that the marriage is having problems right now or does she think everything is just fine? If you're feeling disconnected then I'm guessing that she must have some awareness of it... You've talked about your feelings, yes?

Tell you what, Sam, suggest counseling. If she's not ready to do that for whatever reason, then find a licensed marriage and family therapist (MFT) and make an appointment for yourself. You need to talk to someone.

In friendship,

Annie
